'No' to Nuclear Power
'No' to Nuclear Power We feel deeply concerned at the initiative of the West Bengal government to build nuclear power plants in the Sunderbans. We do not know the exact number of people who lost their lives or suffer extreme ill-effects of radioactive exposure and contamination from the Chernobyl accident which occurred on April 26, 1986, but informed sources apprehend that the number runs into thousands. On the 14th anniversary of Chernobyl, we want to ask: – How safe is the nuclear power generation process? – How safe are the nuclear plants?
'No' to Nuclear Power We feel deeply concerned at the initiative of the West Bengal government to build nuclear power plants in the Sunderbans. We do not know the exact number of people who lost their lives or suffer extreme ill-effects of radioactive exposure and contamination from the Chernobyl accident which occurred on April 26, 1986, but informed sources apprehend that the number runs into thousands. On the 14th anniversary of Chernobyl, we want to ask: – How safe is the nuclear power generation process? – How safe are the nuclear plants? – When will we have the right solutions of the problem of safe disposal of nuclear wastes? – When will nuclear power truly become economically viable? – Is there any social institution which can take the responsibility of decommissioning a nuclear power plant bearing the enormous cost at the end of its life and guard the highly radioactive core for centuries? In view of the extremely hazardous nature and irreversible effects of such an enterprise affecting the lives of generations to come, may we urgently ask the government of West Bengal not to build any nuclear power plant in West Bengal? We do not underestimate the problem of adequate energy supply to the people, nor do we like to underestimate the potential of nuclear power to do untold harm to human beings and their environment. We call for an effort to accelerate research and development on safe, clean and renewable energy sources and to encourage greater energy efficiency along with more economic use of energy. We are opposed to nuclear power plants everywhere – all over the subcontinent and the world. Let us commit ourselves to a safe way. Let us say no to nuclear power.
