WEEKLYECONOMIC AND POLITICAL IT Boom and the Economy Is the Information Technology boom on the bourses over? After edging several traditional manufacturing companies out of the Sensex and accounting for a large proportion of the market capitalisation of listed scrips, some of the most vaunted IT stocks have suddenly taken a tumble. This follows similar developments in other markets around the world. However, it would be premature to pronounce the IT boom over, not only because prices of technology stocks on the US Nasdaq, the most important source of the boom, are still aloft but also because of the embedded role that IT plays in contemporary economies.
