This volume originates from a confer    ence on ‘The Worlds of Indian Industrial Labour’ held at the Centre of Asian Studies, Amsterdam between December 9-13, 1997. The ninth in the series ‘Contributions to Indian Sociology’, it brings together a collection of papers by anthropologists, sociologists and historians that were presented at the conference.

The papers present different aspects of Indian labour and glimpses of his richly nuanced world, but as Parry states in his introduction, studies and attitudes towards Indian labour centre around his/her lack of commitment and the differing evolutionary trajectory followed in the path of industrial development. These papers are a response and an answer to such givens.
