Partha S Ghosh’s article ‘Wither Indian     Polity?’ (November 27, 1999) provided a lot of new insights. His suggestion that the BJP should distance itself from the hindutva brigade and make itself more amenable to the pluralistic ethos of India makes interesting reading.

There are, however, some aspects of today’s political reality which the writer does not touch upon. As far as economic ideology goes, there is no difference between today’s mainstream BJP leadership and mainstream Congress leadership. They find themselves in two different camps only because political parties in India are organised on the basis of political ideology as against economic ideology.
