Power Equation

AFTER weeks of deliberation the Andhra Pradesh government has announced increases in power tariff for some sections of consumers. This is part of an exercise to reform the Slate Electricity Board (SER) to improve its financial position and to pave the way for privatisation of the power sector. It is a happening in one slate of the Indian Union, but acutely demonstrates how the Indian economy works. Many other SEBs are in similar financial straits and the reasons why they all make huge losses are not very different, for that reason, this regional event deserves notice.
