such processes have been instituted in some European countries, as in Denmark, the Danish Board of Technology runs consensus conferences in which ordinary citizens participate on a range of policy issues including irradiated food and biotechnology in agriculture. Certainly, farmers' lobbies like the KRRS or similar movements in Maharashtra, Gujarat and elsewhere should be the ones to insist upon such processes being initiated. Only then can farmers ensure that their environment is safe and the economy which supports them and to which they contribute remains healthy. Burning experimental crops, ransacking offices or making monsters of multinationals will hardly provide the solution. Instead it delays the process of building a strong lobby of people's scientists which can demand information and explanations, scrutinise it and mobilise protest whenever necessary.
