Work and Workers in Mumbai, 1930s-90s-Changing Profile, Enduring Problems

held in December 1992 in Mumbai, out. of which came the two volumes, Bombay; Metaphor for Modern India and Bombay Mosaic of Modern Culture (OUP, 1995), Alice Thorner, Sujata Patel and Darryl D'Monte convened in late November 1997, a second seminar more specifically centred on labour and labourers in the city. The aim put forward' by the convenors was to throw light on the factors social and political as well as economic which had transformed the conditions of work and of daily life for the bulk of the population over the previous, half century.
