Dealing with NPAs A correspondent writes: THE problem of non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks seems to be raising its ugly head everywhere, In South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia this was said to be the principal factor behind their economic crisis. In Japan things are still brewing, but the country has escaped that sort of collapse. Other east Asian countries could not escape without resorting to the IMF. It is not surprising therefore that at the recent Delhi seminar on Global Banking, the issue of NPAs was uppermost in the discussions. Interestingly, however, the problem of NPAs was approached by most participants rather lightly.
