In engineering and construction there is L & T, in boilers Thermax, HMT in machine tools, BHEL in power plants, Kirloskar in diesel engines and generators, Paharpur in transmission towers, along with many others. But there are practically no Indian brands that have a global or even international name recognition. If Indian companies are to compete effectively with global ones, even in the Indian market, they will have to take the battle into overseas markets. This will have to be done selectively and with very sharp focus on market segments, but will still be expensive. They will also have to invest in India to retain for their brands a high place in consumer recognition and respect, Those companies that do not make the effort will be low margin manufacturers of generic unbranded products, or will die. In either case they are fated to be dinosaurs.
