DR N H ANTIA, clearly, is averse to Johns Hopkins University (JHU) opening a public health institute in Kerala ("Public Health for Private Gain' EPW, August 9,1997). What is not clear is why he thinks so. The essay laments the sorry state of health care in India where rural primary care, public hospitals and indigenous medicine are sacrificed at the altar of western style technology-intensive medicine.
