Tyranny in These Times ONCE more the tyrants clamour for the blood of artists and once more we are called upon to declare our faith in argument over punishment, in contention over violence. M F Husain and Salman Rushdie are led to the courts by the minister of culture for whom art and debate are to be subsumed by the exigencies of political alignments and the strong arm of the state. As Faiz Ahmed Faiz wrote in 1952 ('Lauh-o-Qalam'), "hahn talkhi-e-aiyam abhi aur barhegi, hahn ahl- e-sitam mashq-e-sitam karte rahenge" (' Yes, these bitter times will sharply increase; Yes, the tyrants will not renounce their tyranny'). Or. perhaps we might say, the tyrants will not renounce their tyranny until they are forced to do so.
