EPW Research Foundation A SUBSTANTIAL fall in the international prices of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), a raw material used in polyester fibres, since the third quarter of 1995-96 saw Bombay Dyeing's bottomline suffer during 1996-97. Global over-capacities resulted in an over- supply position, thus causing a sharp drop in DMT and purified terephthalie acid (PTA) prices. The company's net sales and value of production declined by 28.6 per cent and 30.6 per cent, respectively. While operating profit fell by 46 percent, the company's net profit was down drastically by 89,4 per cent over the previous year.
