Order that Felled a City

The Supreme Court order directing closure of 8,378 industrial units in Delhi and their relocation elsewhere, on the grounds of pollution, does not locate the malaise of Delhi in proper perspective. The question of pollution needs to be addressed taking into account the entire range of factors causing it -from vehicles to wastewater discharge. Moreover, concerns of equity and justice should be part of pollution eradication so as to prevent easy victimisation of the toiling masses of the city.
