BPL SANYO TECHNOLOGIES-Credit Squeeze Affects Results

EPW Research Foundation BPL SANYO TECHNOLOGIES is engaged in the manufacture of radio cassette recorders, television sets, audio deck mechanisms, compact discs, polyvaricon gang condensors, and speaker systems. A part of the BPL group, the company managed a 2.8 per cent rise in its bottomline during 1995-96. A sharp rise in interest (up 33.6 per cent) and depreciation charges(up 30.3 percent)seems to have taken its toll on the company's performance. This, despite the fact that net sales and value of production both improved by around 28.5 per cent, and operating profit increased by 21.8 per cent over the previous year, 1994-95. The company claims that the sharp increase in interest cost was due to the severe credit squeeze and the higher funding needs to service a wider distribution network. The silver lining in the company's performance seems to be the increase in export earnings from around Rs 0.71 crore during increase of more than 100 per cent. With
