When he was arrested on February 21, the local Shiv Sena MP not only came out strongly against the action but even went on a hunger-strike in protest. The general belief is that Gawli's services are much in demand lately by the land sharks and the politicians in league with them who want to get unencumbered possession of prime real estate by removing legitimate occupants or brow-beating workers who have large dues from the textile mills and have been opposing the mills being allowed to dispose of their land. The only assets of these mills today are the large pieces of prime real estate in their possession. Gawli's men have also been found useful in breaking up rival trade unions.
