EPW Research Foundation CESC New Projects IN January 1997, Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) will complete 1 00 years of operations in Calcutta. The company is on the verge of touching the 1000 mw peak load mark with over 12 lakh connections in its 567 sq km command area. Some 5 lakh consumers pay a tarrif of less than 67 paise per unit and another five lakh are charged less than Re 1 per unit. The company distributes power directly to the consumers there- by avoiding the problem of delays in payment by the state electricity board. This RPG group company has planned investments of Rs 14,000 crore. CESC closed the financial year ended March 1995 with net sales of Rs 918 crore, up by 16 per cent from Rs 789 crore in the previous year. Total income rose by 16 per cent from Rs 837 crore to Rs 969 crore. Provision for depreciation increased by 71 per cent. With a zero tax provision, net profit surged by 61 per cent to Rs 69 crore. The company has hiked dividend from 30 per cent to 35 per cent.
