Labouring Class Stratification-US Style
US Style Robi Chakravorti IN early part of March, there was a spectacular 18-day general strike in two General Motors (GM) brake-making factories in the US. The repercussions of the strike led to the closing down of about three-fourth of GM plants in the country idling about 83,000 GM workers. The issue causing the conflict between the largest automobile plant in the country and United Automobile Workers Union (U A W), the largest and historically activist labour union, was 'outsourcing' a new term that has crept into the current rhetoric dealing with economic and social issues.
