THE volatility of the sensex index is sending shudders down the spines of middle class Indians, who had pinned their hopes on multiplying their savings and living standards through the magic of the stock market. The erratic share prices are only a sign of the uncertainty and fear that is gripping the investment community shareholders, businessmen and foreigners. During the last decade India was seen as a potential Asian tiger, with a steady GDP growth rate of 5 per cent per annum. Now foreign investors are wondering what the future holds. The years 1996 and 1997 may go down as years of uncertainty and waste when the political and economic history of these times is written.
