Social Science Research Institutes THE article 'Where Has All the Research Gone?" by an anonymous author (EPW, October 1) should lead to an open debate on the status of autonomy of academic institutions on the one hand and on professional and financial audit of social science research institutes on the other. The latter is quite important as the state can no longer afford to ignore the productivity of its scarce resources earmarked for research.
