The only solution offered by the multilateral agencies is for the government to sell public sector equities which is suicidal, for what the situation demands now is the mobilisation of investible resources with the public sector undertakings themselves to help revive industrial activity. The current situation also calls for stoppage of gold and silver imports and an overall restraint on nonfunctional consumption so that household savings and domestic investment are augmented. But the route that the government has chosen will not allow any such reversal of policies, however inadvisable these policies may be. In sum, the record of the past three years is a depressing one which has placed in jeopardy the economic well-being of large segments of the Indian population and possibly the socio-economic stability of the entire society.
