'Unigauge' Madness IN December last, the standing committee on railways presented its third report relating to gauge conversion to the Lok Sabha after it had been duly adopted by the Railway Board. The main thrust of the report was the surprisingly emphatic advice to the ministry to review the policy of large-scale gauge conversion which was being implemented since 1972. The committee felt that the project was in need of urgent review with "a view to rearranging the priorities of the various ongoing and future projects". These recommendations it urged be taken into consideration by the ministry while finalising the proposals for the railway budget.
