EPW Research Foundation ATLAS CYCLES Focus on Premium Market INCORPORATED in 1951, Atlas Cycles is a pioneer in the bicycle industry in the country. Starting with a single factory at Sonepat, Haryana, without any foreign collaboration or know-how. the company commanded the largest share of the domestic cycles market till 1977 when a strike at its Sonepat factory saw rivals Hero and TI Cycles race ahead in financial terms. Though the company has had to relinquish its top position to Hero Cycles, it is still the second largest player in the domestic bicycle industry (and the third largest in the world) with a 25 per cent market share and 'Atlas' is rated to be among the top eight consumer durable brands in the country.
