Hindu Girl-Child

IN response to the Jasodhara Bagchi's thought-provoking article (October 9), the 'Hindu girl-child', a phenomenon which is as much a factual probability as a 'Hindu boy-child\ seems to become a 'social problem' as and when any of the 'social mechanisms' safe-guarding the humane interests of the girl-child of the patriarchal/patrilocal system goes out of practice As for instance! the social mechanism of Mevirate' wherein the husband's younger brother or an agnate is socially bound to offer to marry his elder brother's child/girl widow, when not insistently practised in a patriarchical society would naturally leave the girl-widow in the lurch hence rendering her a 'social problem' of sorts.
