Several scientific experiments relating to bio-technology and tissue culture, agronomy, plant nutrition, water management, satellite imagery and energy conservation were carried out. The company's R and D expenditure was 0.74 per cent of turnover in 1990-91. A range of flavoured teas was produced on commercial scale and exported. Other products like decaffeinated black tea and instant tea, organic tea and medical oils were also developed on an experimental basis. The button mushroom plant established in Kerala started trial production and is expected to add to exports.
