The Other Side Pradip Prabhu Tribal pockets of Thane district near Bombay recorded over a hundred deaths due to gastroenteritis in August and September. The government response was typical: blame the tribals for their ignorance and apathy in dealing with the disease, rush medical help and set up a special group to look into the health needs of the adivasis. None of this effort is likely to have any impact unless basic socio-economic and cultural issues affecting the tribals are addressed.
