More of the Same THE results of the by-elections to the 15 Lok Sabha and 56 assembly constituencies have not substantially affected the political configurations of the union and state governments, except perhaps to formally confirm the dominant position of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh' with that party securing an absolute majority in the state assembly. But as against this, the BJP has made few gains elsewhere, winning only two of the 12 Lok Sabha seats whose results have been announced, one of which is Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh which it had won in the last general elections, and losing in some of its traditional strongholds
