ASHER TEXTILES-Thrust on Exports

Production of zig-zag sewing machines rose by 30 per cent from 28,744 units to 37,387 units. The Jammu plant improved its zig-zag range with added features and developed two new models including one for artisans' use. Plans are reportedly afoot to introduce new generation zig-zag machines with technology from Singer. The company introduced high-speed industrial sewing machines to cater to the growing needs of ready-made garments and leather goods industries. However, the straight-stitch sewing machine market declined during the year under review. This was due to the slow progress of government-aided sales of sewing machines under the poverty alleviation programmes.
