With this new emphasis on condoms has also come new barrier methods for women, although this does not necessarily mean a de-emphasis of hormonal contraceptives. While this new stress on barrier methods, for men and women, is to be welcomed, considering that they are safer in the short and long term, it has to be seen in the context of developments in the family planning strategy world-wide.
