Since the Congress(I), the party to which he belongs, had been responsible for the management of the country's economy for all but a couple of years of the decade he was talking about, his reticence on this subject is understandable perhaps. But that is not the relevant issue. What matters much more is that, judging by Chidambaram's other remarks at the meeting, it does not appear that the present government has learnt very much from the acknowledged lack of success of previous Congress(I) governments economic policies in stepping up exports.
