Now the arrangements are internalised. The Bangladeshis have acquired a kind of skill in this particular sphere of activity, how to purge an unpopular regime. Ripples of little protest movements, persecution and arrests, shootings by the police and the army, the little movements grow into massive upsurges, the nervous administration compounds its earlier follies by indulging in some more ferocious shootings, until the entire population rises in revolt. The head of state, the man with the reputation of great evil-doing, either takes to his heel, or is cut down mercilessly.
