Judicial Pronouncements? SERIOUS note must indeed be taken of chief justice Ranganath Mishra's public pronouncements on women. Significantly, these were not casual remarks, but formed a part of what one might say is a thesis on women's place in society. According to the chief justice women by claiming equality have agreed to a lowering of their position in society. And the constitution he implies by giving them equal rights has in fact wronged them. He therefore urges women to "go back to their homes". He has also to all events and purposes demolished the social welfare department's efforts to persuade women that food intake in a family need not follow patriarchal hierarchial patterns, "Does the woman who gives the food at home ever bother: My husband has eaten more than I have. My equality is affected".
