This has found expression in increasing the supply of modern inputs, among them chemical fertilisers and labour-saving farm machinery, expansion of irrigation facilities, especially on private account, and production for the market which is subsidised by the state in a variety of ways. These principles of commercial agriculture into which a small upper crust of the farming population has been drawn could not but have far-reaching implications. A new nexus between rural and urban vested interests in the economy, society and polity has been established to intensify the exploitation of the working, people.
