Problematic Relationship

T V SATHYAMURTHY's extremely perceptive and thoughtful piece on China (EPW, August 11) fails short of conceding to democracy,, bourgeois or otherwise, an essentially educative role. Also even as Marxism's class analysis retains its validity as critique, to me as an Indian worker of the mind, not without some experience of radical struggle or socialist dreams, the relationship of democracy with socialism appears problematic at least in the third world. T V Sathyamurthy either deliberately omits to share this feeling with us, or living and working in the first world, conditions his thought differently from mine in the third Delhi. S SHUKLA for labour is generated and as a consequence there is little change in economic structure and feudal social consciousness. We are trying to put away all evils of feudalism under the carpet of imported consumerism in the hope that this will dazzle the people.
