Indic Religions and 'The Truth' I READ with interest Akeel Bilgrami's paper 'Rushdie and Reform of Islam' (EPW, March 24). It is addressed primarily to Muslims, especially the moderates among them; non-Muslims have no contribution to make to the substantive debate on reform in Islam, although us outcome will have profound consequences for others. But there is one observation of Bilgrami which calls for a comment by a Hindu Bilgramt writes that Hinduism and Jainism are exclusivist religions, which do not admit outsiders (i e, do not allow conversion), while Islam and Christianity are open to all, which Bilgrami finds morally more attractive than the alleged exclu- sivism of Hinduism and Jainism. There is here a serious misunderstanding of the Hindu Jain position.
