Politics and Literary Awards IN his article 'Arrogance of the Irrelevant' (March 17), G P Deshpande has made a mean and mendacious accusation against me, without mentioning my name, that because I ("a former socialist, then in the Janata Party") was minister of education and culture in Sharad Pawar's ministry (July 1978 to February 1980), that year (1979) the Maharashtra state literary award for biographies went to a "socialist [again the name is not mentioned; it is B N Rajhans] who is not particularly known for his literary excellence". Deshpande further suggests that the other reason why the award was given for this work was that the subject of the biography was Jayaprakash Narayan.
