THE MEDIA-Need for Wider Debate

THE fact that the granting of autonomy to Doordarshan and the All-India Radio should have been among the very first issues to be addressed by the new government is not at all surprising. Over the past year the Rajiv Gandhi government had done its best to muzzle the media; while crude attempts to limit press freedom such as the introduction of the anti-defamation bill failed badly, measures to control the electronic media had increasingly become blatant. In an election so bereft of issues, government interference with the media became a major poll issue and a rallying point among some sections of the electorate.
