NEW DELHI The Post-Election Agenda BM The idea that the ruling establishment can transcend and harmonise the clash of interests in society was naive to begin with and, in the years of Rajiv Gandhi's rule, has been found to be a grand deception. It is time the political environment offered the opportunity for contending political formations to clarify their positions and commitments and seek popular support, on that basis. The coalitions of social and economic forces that emerge must become transparent and must not be obfuscated by pretensions to articulation of the claims of all interests.
