SUNDARAM-CLAYTON-Business Reorganisation

TISCO Fine Honed Efficiency TATA IRON AND STEEL COMPANY (TISCO) has shown excellent performance during 1988-89 with record production, sales and profits. It achieved gross saleable steel production of 1.944 million tonnes with the proportion of higher valued finished steel at 53 per cent in the output as against 51 per cent in the previous year. The iron output was at an all-time high of 2.238 million tonnes. This was possible because of improved quality of inputs and better operational efficiencies. Planned lowering of ash conte ' in the washed coking coal from the company's collieries, increased use of better quality imported coking coal and consistent quality of iron ore from the company's iron ore mines contributed to better inputs at the blast furnaces. The increased iron output helped to offset the low scrap availability during the year. The company's iron ore mines raised a record output of 3.57 million tonnes as against the previous highest of 3.45 million tonnes in 1984-85. The continuing drive to lower energy consumption resulted in reducing the skip coke rate at the blast furnaces to a record low of 695 kg/t of iron, as against the previous lowest of 731 kg/t in 1987-88.
