THE ELECTIONS-Silence on Peoples Concerns

Congress(I)'s Communalism BHARATIYA Janata Party leader Atal Bchari Vajpayee was stating a contemporary truism when he complained, "If I had gone to Ayodhya to launch the [election] campaign they would have said I was communal". And yet when Con- gress(l) leader Rajiv Gandhi began his party's election campaign from Fai/abad (Ayodhya) which he described as the "sacred land", one "where Lord Rama was born", and promised to usher in an era of "Ram Rajya" there was little criticism One need feel no sympathy for BJP's con sternaliorr at being upstaged, but there is no reason to gloss over the role of the Congress(I) in stoking the fires of Hindu fundamentalism.
