What People Must Not Know OFFICIAL justification for Doordar- shan's unwarranted attempt at tampering with the scripts of several opposition parties by pious invocation of the code of conduct, established in 1977 on the basis of an all-party consensus, will find little purchase given the widespread impression that the official media has, over the last many years, been converted into a servile mouthpiece of the ruling dynasty, purveying its own brand of hack-written history glorifying the Nehru-Indira-Rajiv Gandhi lineage as the makers of Mahaan Bharat. Doordarshan ruled that the scripts of the CPI(M), CPI, Congress(S) and BJP violated the 1977 guidelines which lay down seven codes of general conduct that prohibit, among other things, criticism of friendly countries, attacks on religions and communities, criticism by name of any person, programmes featuring the prime minister, chief ministers or ministers directly relating to the elections.
