HIND LEVER Growth Oriented HINDUSTAN LEVER has performed well during 1988 despite certain unfavourable factors, including the lock-out of its factory at Sewri in Bombay from June 21, 1988. Sales amounted to Rs 845 crore against Rs 795 crore in the previous year and gross profit was Rs 94.02 crore against Rs 92.30 crore. Net profit came to Rs 48.29 crore (Rs 46.49 crore). Dividend has been stepped up from 25 per cent to 32 per cent which is covered 1.62 times by earnings as against 1.99 times previously. The company's exports reached a new high level at Rs 104 crore. Shoes and shoe uppers have been added to the produot range and a new facility has been set up at Pondicherry to manufacture these products. Commercial production has commenced in the current year. Among the company's new investments and acquisitions, the project for the manufacture of synthetic detergents at Sumerpur (UP) and that for the manufacture of toilet soaps at Orai (UP) are due to be commissioned during 1989. The fluid cracking catalyst project at Haldia for the manufacture of cracking catalyst for use in petroleum refineries is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 1989. The company is setting up a new facility to manufacture functionalised biopoly- mers at Pondiqherry in collaboration with National Starch Corporation, an associate company in the US. The company has acquired land to invest in facilities for upgradation and processing of oils at Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and also for the manufacture of fatty acids at Orai in UP. The processed vegetable oils project has been completed and commissioned at Tkloja in Maharashtra. The company has also received government permission to put up plants for the manufacture of zeolite and synthetic detergents at Haldia and steps are on hand to implement these projects.
