Spurt in Non-Food Bank Credit

So-called 'portfolio management' cut the rate of growth of commercial banks' demand deposits by half in 1987. The growth of bank credit, other than for food procurement, was the largest for any year so far. And the rise in Reserve Bank credit to government was the second highest since 1971.
