There are also other militant student leaders and it is quite clear now that the mass upsurge was the culmination of growing dissatisfaction and anger engendered by a deteriorating economy and increasing suppression of civil liberties. Moreover, the Ne Win government's economic policies such as, for instance, the 1987 demonetisation, which resulted in nation-wide riots, hit certain sections of the population such as small traders, government employees and farmers badly. Even within the ruling party, there was growing dissent and after August 8 when the recent wave of protests began, several party members have openly called for an end to one-party rule.
