Gujarat-Communal Divide

Technical Education Tenuous Linkage with Industry THE committee set up to review the functioning of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) as centres of advanced studies and research in science, technology and engineering and recommend lines on which their future growth should be chartered, has submitted its report. One of the principal observations of the committee relates to the tenuous linkages between the IITs and industry and the IITs and the R and D establishment. In suggesting measures to strengthen the relationship, the committee does not however seem to have gone into the causes of these tenuous linkages. Thus the committee suggests the following: (1) The lif t should invite competent persons from industry to be adjunct professors. (2) The IIT faculty should compulsorily spend one of their sabbaticals in industry. (3) Tax concessions should be given to industry to financially support the research activities of the IITs, presumably by sponsoring research projects and technical consultancy.
