acrylic fibres machineries has been entered into with NEUMAG of West Germany which would make India self-reliant in these items. The company is now poised for broadening its manufacturing activities in the fields of water pollution control equipment and chemical process plants such as pressure vessels/reactors/columns/towers/ harton spheres, heat transfer equipment and systems, evaporators and evaporation system, for which it has recently received industrial licence. The working of the first cement unit with an annual capacity of half a million tonnes has been satisfactory. The second unit with a similar capacity commenced commercial production in April 1987. The company's joint venture foreign projects of viscose fibre in Thailand and Indonesia and of carbon- black in Thailand continued to operate satisfactorily. The joint sector companies in India, Bihar Caustic and Chemicals and Tamil Nadu Fluorine and Allied Chemicals, suffered due to adverse market conditions. The latter unit is trying to diversify its product range. The mechanical completion of Indo Gulf Fertilisers, in which the company has made a sizeable investment is expected by mid-1988, ahead of schedule. Grasim has also decided to make an investment of about Rs 5 crore towards the equity of a new company to be formed in collaboration with other companies to set up a refinery at Mangalore.
