TISCO Record Production TATA IRON AND STEEL COMPANY (TISCO) has set up a joint venture company under the name 'Tata Timken' in association with Timken Company of the US to manufacture bearings for the automotive industry and industrial machinery and for Indian railways. These bearings will be manufactured to Timken's international standard of quality through a totally indigenous route of steel to bearings, a unique feature in the bearings industry, Tisco will subscribe Rs 15.60 crore to the equity capital and Timken Rs 10.40 crore. Tisco also proposes to acquire 50 per cent of the issued capital of MAN (India) Engineering comprising 15,000 shares at a price of Rs 35 per share. After the acquisition of these shares, it is proposed to change the name of the company to 'Tata MAN' and issue further capital, if necessary, to meet the requirements of the new company. Meanwhile, under the continuing The Week's Companies modernisation programme of Tisco, the 3 lakh tonne capacity bar and rod mill costing about Rs 78 crore was commissioned in early March last within a record construction period of 20 months. Good progress has been made on the raw materials yard and the sinter plant work is also in progress to augment the power capacity to 60 MW. Another important facility which will enable increased recovery of iron-bearing materials from waste was commissioned in October 1986. Various other facilities to increase the steel works* capacity to 2.10 million tonnes of saleable steel from the existing 1.74 million tonnes are under execution.
