Public Sector-Pushing Workers to the Wall
Maharashtra Private Uses of Co-operatives THE newspapers headlines that the S B Chavan government has, at last, come down heavily on private trusts floated and managed by chairmen and directors of the powerful sugar co-operatives are, to say the least, misleading. The state government has neither abolished existing private trusts nor has it prohibited the floating such trusts in future by the sugar co-operative barons. What the government has done is that it has fixed the rates at which deductions can be made from the final cane price paid to the grower-members of the co-operatives for the public trusts for economic and social objectives set up by the chairmen and directors of the co-operatives.
