Ad hocism continues to mark the management of edible oils supply. This is amply borne out by the manner in which the government has gone about effecting changes in the usage of expeller rape/ mustard oil by the vanaspati industry as also in the allocation of imported oils to the industry. At the beginning of April, the government announced an increase in the usage of expeller oil from 10 per cent to 20 per cent. But only six weeks thereafter, on May 14, came the announcement of the ban on the use of expeller oil with immediate effect. Not only that; the vanaspati units were ordered to liquidate their entire stock of this oil within a fortnight.
