Development of Capitalism in Indian Agriculture: Gujarat, 1850-1900 Cathy Chua India's economic development has been portrayed in dualist terms by those who have argued that India's socio- economic formation is considerably different from today's advanced countries in the early stages of their capitalist development. According to this view, by the end of the nineteenth century in India, there were enclaves of capitalist production but they were surrounded by the ocean of pre-capitalist agriculture.
