The 'Film Bandh' and After HC DURING the past few years a new type of business has made its appearance in the commercial field, that of leasing machinery to meet the requirements of a whole industry, the cost of which at times run into many lakhs of rupees. As lease is not sale, such transactions do not attract sales tax. To bring such transactions within the ambit of the sales tax, the Maharashtra government introduced an act called the Maharashtra Sales Tax on Transfer of Right to Use Any Goods for Any Purpose Act, 1985, and brought the film industry within its purview.
